Title - 2.3m rode Metro on Monday, the highest

Delhi Metro on Monday recorded its highest ever ridership - almost 2.3 million.
According to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials, 22.89 lakh people travelled on six metro corridors spanning 170km on Monday. The ridership figure does not include the nearly 20,000 passengers
of the 22.7-kilometre Airport Metro.

Delhi Metro achieved the milestone in little more than 10 years of its operations. With this, it surpassed its earlier record of 22.77 lakh ridership on November 27, 2012.

According to Delhi Metro officials, almost 75 per cent of the total Metro passengers travel on its two most crowded sections - Jahangirpuri-HUDA City Centre (Gurgaon) and Dwarka-Noida-Vaishali lines.

"With almost 8.9 lakh people, the Dwarka-Noida-Vaishali corridor recorded the highest ridership followed by Jahangirpuri-HUDA City Centre line with 8.1 lakh passengers. More than 1.7 million passengers travelled on these two corridors on Monday," a DMRC spokesperson said.

The Inderlok-Mundka line recorded the least ridership of barely 81,000.

From its initial figure of a modest 82,000 in December 2002, Delhi Metro's ridership has been steadily rising. It recorded a sudden jump in 2009 when the Noida and Gurgaon corridors were thrown open to public.

To cater to such a huge crowd, the Delhi Metro initially increased the number of coaches in each train from four to six on its two most crowded corridors. With the number of passengers steadily rising, officials said they will soon introduce eight-coach trains on the two lines.

Delhi Metro is also set to add 140km to its network by 2016 under the Phase 3 expansion and another 120km under phase 4. The total ridership by the end of phase 4 expansion is likely to exceed five million every day.
