INDORE: Alert train guard prevented a goods train from turning into a burning train at Khandwa railway station of Central Railway on Thursday.

A 40-wagon goods train carrying coal from Pune to Bina oil refinery in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district halted at the Khandwa railway station at around 1.30pm on Thursday. Ten minutes later, just when the train started moving, the train's guard spotted smoke billowing from the last three wagons.

He immediately informed the train driver and also the Khandwa station master N Chandra, after which the train was stopped and the power supply of the high tension railway line cut promptly to prevent any mishap.

"The last three wagons of the train were promptly detached and fire tenders pressed into action to prevent the smoke from snowballing into a major fire. After around an hour, the goods train moved ahead," Khandwa railway station master N Chandra said.

While Railway Protection Force (RPF) officials at Khandwa railway station said initially it seemed that coal loaded wagons caught fire due to extreme heat, still the incident is being investigated thoroughly.
