Anti-Littering Checks by SCR Yield Rs. 19.8 lakhs Penalty From 9720 Persons

The Indian Railways (Penalties for Activities Affecting Cleanliness at Railway Premises) Rules, which came into effect from November, 2012, authorizes the Railway administration to penalize any person / passenger who is found either littering or spitting or urinating or defecating or pasting posters or dumping garbage o­n railway premises such as stations, trains etc., with a penalty up to Rs. 500/-

These provisionsare being vigorously implemented o­n all the six Divisions of SCR by StationMasters, Ticket Collectors and other railway officials who are authorized to detect and penalize the offenders.Itis aimed at maintaining proper cleanliness in railway promises towards providing a clean and pleasant ambience to the passengers.

During the month of May 2013, 9720 persons ( 2580 persons in Secunderabad Division, 2340 persons in Vijayawada Division, 1557 persons in Guntakal Division, 1325 persons in Hyderabad Division, 1247 persons in Nanded Division and 671 persons in Guntur Division ) were detected and penalized for violatingthe guidelines o­n maintaining cleanliness in Railway premises.

Since the introduction of the said anti-littering rules in November, 2012, till the end of May, 2013,11,000 persons were detected for violating the provisions of the rules and an amount of Rs. 23/-lakhs was realized from them towards penalty.
