In view of the growing floating population in the city, the Belgaum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) has urged railway authorities to take immediate measures to improve rail services. The Belgaum railway station, one of the oldest in the country, has connecting trains to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Puducherry, Pune and Goa. However, services are not adequate to cope with the present situation, the BCCI said. After holding a discussion with railway officials on Tuesday, the BCCI submitted a memorandum seeking measures to improve rail services.Other suggestions include an additional gate on the eastern side near the Railway Auditorium with a ticket counter, a separate ticket counter for persons with disabilities and senior citizens, speedy issue of tickets, installation of platform ticket vending machine, more number of chairs and benches, a medical store, parking for two and four-wheelers and shifting the drinking water facility away from the public toilet.

The BCCI said the height of the platform should be raised to help persons with disabilities and senior citizens board trains. The members also sought a separate ramp to connect the first and second platforms, more wheelchairs, display boards , utility fee on a par with other stations, helpdesk for passengers, improved security with policewomen and more number of city buses.

BCCI president Satish R. Tendolkar and Station Manager S.M. Kustagi were present at the meeting.
