GUWAHATI, Oct 5 – Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today laid stress on concerted efforts to protect the girl child. The Chief Minister was addressing a function organised by the Indian Society for Third Party Assisted Reproduction, NF Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation and Frontier TV on CME on Surrogacy in India and Value the Girl Child Campaign at the Rang Bhawan, Maligaon here.
The Chief Minister said the society must play a proactive role in saving the girl child and nursing them. He expressed serious concern over the decline in sex ratio in the country.

According to an official press release, Gogoi appreciated Miss Universe Olivia Frances Culpo for taking up the cause of the girl child. Thanking the reigning beauty queen for coming to this part of the country, the Chief Minister welcomed her saying, “Ours is a land of hills and rivers inhabited by beautiful people. The North East region is the most beautiful part of our country.”

In her brief speech, Culpo, who was dressed in traditional Assamese attire, underlined the importance of maintaining right to privacy of donor as well as surrogate mother by involving a third party agency. On the issue of girl child, Culpo said she wanted to bring the desired change by involving herself in the campaign.

Earlier, in his address, General Manager, NFR, RS Virdi, said that social transformation could be brought about in the girl child through education.

Later, the Chief Minister and the Miss Universe flagged off a rally, a press release stated.
