The Central Railway on Friday announced the launch of 19 new long-distance trains, in addition to unveiling its new timetable that comes into effect from July
Forty new suburban trains will also commence operations within the next year and several new improvements in long-distance and suburban trains have been promised.
Out of the 40 new suburban trains, six pairs will run between Thane and Karjat, five pairs between CST and Kalyan, four pairs between Thane and Kasara, three pairs between Thane and Panvel and two pairs between Wadala and Panvel. The five new trains between CST and Kalyan consist of 15 cars each. In addition, new cars will be added on all suburban trains running between Thane and Vashi. According to the general manager of the CR, Subodh Jain, each new train created, provides about six suburban services, which means that there will be approximately 240 new suburban services on the Central Railways. Among the new long-distance trains, most will be connecting Tier-II cities. There will also be an extension of many existing trains. In addition, all trains departing from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Kurla will now also halt at Thane. “This move will lead to a lesser number of people having to travel back towards Thane. Next year, we will concentrate on increasing the number of stoppages, rather than speeding up long-distance trains,” said Mr Jain.
