Kochi: The Edapally railway station will be developed soon into a major centre with all basic amenities, according to divisional railway manager Rajesh Agrawal. A flyover would be constructed from the eastern entry of the Ernakulam South station to Kadavantra for easy commuter access, he said.

These projects were announced at a function at the Edapally railway station when the Amrita Institute of Medical Science donated furniture for the station’s waiting room. Edapally is one of the three planned to be developed into an outerstation. Currently, it caters to only passenger trains and three express trains.

“The railways will introduce reservation facilities at the ticket counter functioning on the AIMS  premises,” said Agrawal. GCDA Chairman N. Venugopal said the development agency had charted projects to help the railways develop the eastern entry of the South railway station, which is rising in prominence.

“We’d provide necessary land to the railways at the eastern entry to set up escalators that would be of great help to the elderly and physically challenged commuters. More importantly, a project is being conceived to construct a flyover from the eastern entry to Kadavantra,” he said.
