Title - Government Railway Police register case after 16 months

The Government Railway Police (GRP) registered the theft case of September 2011, after 16 months. The case was registered after the victim filed a petition under Right to Information Act (RTI).The victim, P. Sesha Venkata Ramesh, met Vijayawada GRP several times with the regard to the case, but nothing materslised. On March 23, the police issued the FIR after the complainant sought information through RTI Act on the case.Ramesh, native of Eluru, was employed with a BPO in Chennai.While he was travelling in Rajahmundry-Vijayawada passenger train on September 5, 2011, he found his luggage missing near Mustabada railway station.Gold ornaments, a laptop, digital camera and some documents worth about Rs.1 lakh were in the suitcase.The victim lodged a complaint with the Vijayawada Railway Police on September 10. However, the police did not register a case and since then Ramesh has been making rounds at GRP police seeking justice.

On March 9, he filed a petition under RTI Act, to the Public Information Officer (PIO), and sought information on whether the case was booked or not, if so, the reasons for the inaction. Responding to the petition, the railway police issued an FIR with No.22/2013.

Speaking to The Hindu on Tuesday the victim said: “The police officers make tall claims on swift action, visible policing and justice to the needy. But, the situation in police station is different”.

“I visited the police station many times but of no use.

To get the case register, we struggled for one and a half years.

There were days when we waited at the police station throughout the day,” Mr. Ramesh said.

Probe ordered

Superintendent of Railway Police (SRP) Ch. Syam Prasad said a probe was ordered to find out the reasons for the inordinate delay in registering the case.

“An officer of the rank of DSP will enquire into the case and we will take severe action against those responsiblestaff,” Mr. Syam Prasad said.
