Work on Hospet-Hubli-Londa-Tinaighat railway line will be inaugurated by Union Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday at Londa.The 245-km railway line passes through Bellary, Koppal, Gadag, Dharwad, Belgaum and Uttara Kannada districts. Doubling of the line will give a boost to the iron ore industry. It will also increase the number of passenger trains connecting important tourist destinations like Goa to the World Heritage site Hampi. Also, it will help in promoting tourism in North Karnataka.The line will also facilitate movement of imported coal from Marmagao Port to steel industries and upcoming thermal power plants in Jewargi, Gulbarga, and Phase-2 expansion of the Bellary Thermal Power Plant.Considering the traffic potential, the Hospet-Hubli-Londa-Tinaighat-Vasco-da-Gama (407 km) doubling was sanctioned by the railways at a cost of `2,127 crore in 2010-11. The work on Hospet-Tinaighat (245 km) is being taken up under Phase 1 at a cost of `928.85 crore. The final location survey is now in progress in Castle Rock-Kulem ghat section. This project is partially funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd, a Government of India enterprise, is the implementing agency. | ||
