Despite tall promises to make it world-class, development work still hanging fire

Ludhiana: The budget is presented every year and many projects are proposed, but there is no improvement in the condition of the Ludhiana Railway station.The Ludhiana Railway Station is one of the most income-providing railway stations of the country, but the higher railway authorities have turned a blind eye to its upkeep.Many development projects have been hanging fire due to lack of planning and laid-back attitude of the railway officials.The work of installation of wider foot bridge from platform number one to Civil Lines side has not been completed even after 10 years. The work did not resume in 2012.The flyover, which is being constructed in place of the Lakkar Pul may not even meet the new deadline of March 2013. There is no progress in the construction work of a multi-storeyed parking.Besides platform No 1 and 2, all the other platforms are filthy. The platform number 6 and 7 are doted with garbage, as the railway station authorities have not installed washing equipments on these two platforms. The Railways hired a private firm for washing and cleaning the rail tracks of platform No. 1 to 5. But the contract for cleaning the tracks of platform No. 6 and 7 has not been given to any one.Union Minister Manish Tewari promised to make Ludhiana railway station a world -class station, but nothing worthwhile has been done, so far. This time,the officials at the railway station are hopeful that they will be allotted funds in the new budget.Ravinder Sharma, Station Superintendent, said, "We are expecting that Railway Minister Pawan Bansal will focus on sanitation. We need more funds for re-carpeting of tracks and renovation of buildings".
