Trivandrum: After the appreciable efforts in making use of the garbage piled up in the city for constructing railway platforms at Murukkumpuzha and Kochu Veli, Kadakkavoor railway station is next in the list. The 40 metre long and six metre wide platform at Murukkumpuzha will make use of non-biodegradable garbage collected from the Capital city. A similar construction is also progressing at the Kochuveli railway station. The proposed platform at Kadakkavoor is 450 metres in length, seven metres in width, and .8 metre in height. The project was mooted so that the present height of the platform could be raised. A total of 1250 tonnes of garbage will be required to finish the entire project. The construction process involves spreading of thick plastic sheet of around 100 microns at the identified site, and on top of it, layer of trash and soil will be evenly spread up to a height of 30 cms. Each time, the spread is thoroughly compressed by Sheep Foot Rollers. Plastic sheet is spread so that the filthy water from the garbage doesn't pollute the ground water. "This is not a permanent solution though it has its own advantages. This could be considered as a crisis management project. It is also an eco friendly initiative since in the place of garbage, mud would have been collected from our hills," said M Dileep Kumar, Director of Suchitwa Mission. He added that they were considering various options for making the project work in other similar areas. It would probably start within two weeks of time. |
