Chennai: MRTS services between Beach and Velachery were delayed by nearly 40 minutes on Friday afternoon after a train broke down near Thirumayilai station.
Commuters of the Velachery-bound train, which broke down due to a suspected engine failure between Mundakanni Amman temple and Thirumayilai stations, had to trek along the track to reach Thirumayilai.
Trains have not yet been allotted stops at the Mudakakanni Amman temple station as finishing touches are being given. A senior official of Southern Railway said four trains from Beach to Velachery and three trains from Velachery to Beach were delayed because of this disruption.
The stalled train was moved to Thirumayilai and later brought to the Beach station for repairs. It was moved to Thirumayilai using a spare motor, officials said. The disruption did not affect many commuters since it happened during non-peak hours.
Some, however, suffered as they had to wait longer for trains. Many regular commuters switched to buses because of the delay, said a railway official. TNN
