The trial run of Mumbai's Metro railway was successfully completed today, with Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan flagging off the first train on Wednesday morning. Passenger service on part of the Metro line is to begin in September with the entire stretch becoming operational by year-end.The first phase of the Metro on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar stretch in the city's Western suburbs will run on an elevated corridor. The 11.4-km elevated line will have 12 stations on this route and will cover the distance in 21 minutes. At present, it takes more than an hour to cover this stretch through narrow and congested roads.
