Requesting an extension of Metro Rail from Petta to Tripunithura, Tripunithura Rajanagari Union of Residents Association (TRURA) has submitted a memorandum before E Sreedharan, principal advisor of Kochi Metro Rail, at Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) office in Kochi. According to TRURA members, they have discussed the matter with Sreedharan. They added that Sreedharan has also agreed to them that the economic viability of the metro rail will increase if it ends at Tripunithura. “Sreedharan suggested us to bring the matter into the attention of state government. He said that if state government asked him to extend the metro to Tripunthura, he will not have any problems to accept it wholeheartedly,” said TRURA member. The members added that they will do everything to bring the matter before the state government.“We will submit a memorandum to Union Minister K V Thomas, Chief Minister  Oommen Chandy and Excise Minister K Babu,” they added. They said that the Metro Rail terminates at Petta owing to lack of vision by the former municipal authorities of Tripunithura.“Sreedharan mentioned that discussion were held regarding the ending point of Metro. But there were no suggestions from the part of former municipal authorities. Finally, we have decided to terminate it at Petta,” they said.

The residents stressed that Petta, which has been decided as a terminal point of Kochi Metro in the first phase, does not have the space to accommodate the required facilities such as metro station-cum-commercial complex, parking area for commuters and loco service station.

Also the area is thickly populated.

Large-scale eviction would be needed to set up a Metro terminal.
