The Central Zone of the Indian Railway is a railway section of the IR. The Indian Railway has sixteen divisions and the central railway was once the largest. A huge portion of Madhya Pradesh and some parts of Uttar Pradesh were also a part of this zone, but these were separated and a different zone called West Central Zone was formed. The very popular railway station of Mumbai, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, is the headquarter of this railway zone. The first passenger railway line was built in 1853 on the 16th of April and the line is a part of the central railway zone. This line ran from Bombay to Thane. Parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh are covered by this sector of the Indian Railway currently.
