Ludhiana:
All five branches of Uttariya Railway Mazdoor Union (URMU) organised a protest in Railway premises here today. Irked workers of the URMU demanded cancellation of police cases which were registered against the Union workers for thrashing the Northern Railway Mazdoor Union (NRMU) workers on April 27 during elections at Ferozepur. It was the first mass rally of the URMU after winning the Union elections. In the recent elections of Railway Unions, URMU and NRMU both succeeded to get recognition from the Railway Board. Earlier, the NRMU was the only Union which was recognised by the Railway Board.A clash was reported among the activists of the NRMU and the URMU on April 27 in which five activists of the NRMU were injured. The NRMU has conducted several rallies to pressurise the railway authorities to register case against the URMU workers who had allegedly thrashed the NRMU workers. Railway police has registered case against the 7 activists of the URMU under Section 307 IPC.

Manohar Prashar, district president, URMU, said: “NRMU leaders have registered cases against our activists by hiding the facts. Our workers were innocent and they did not attack the NRMU activists. They have blocked the trains to pressurise the authorities to register cases against our workers. We want Railway authorities to cancel the cases registered against our workers.”

“NRMU activists have delayed the trains by blocking the tracks. We demand to register a case against the leaders of the NRMU for blocking the track,” he added.
