CIDCO infuses Rs.739.46 lakh in Nerul-Uran rail project

Belapur/ Nerul-Seawood-Uran Railway Corridor is likely to be a reality soon, as the planning agency CIDCO which is bearing the major part of the project cost has sanctioned Rs.739.46 lakh for the project after a meeting of board of directors held last week. The work on the project restarted in July 2011 after it was stalled in 2010 after differences between the state government and the railways.

The much-awaited rail project got its life again when the City and Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (CIDCO) decided to infuse major amount in the project in July 2010. A tripartite agreement was signed among the state government, CIDCO and the railways. Currently, the work on the project is going on full swing.

“If the present situation continues for the next three years, commuters would be able to take a direct train from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) to Uran,” said Sanjay Bhatia, MD, CIDCO.

The railway line between Nerul and Belapur through Seawood to Uran is being constructed jointly by the Ministry of Railways and CIDCO on a cost-sharing basis. The total cost of the project was estimated at Rs.495.49 crore in 1996-97 when the project was first approved. Following disagreements between the two agencies namely railways and the state government, the work on the line stalled in 2010 following which the cost revisions were undertaken and the cost escalated. In the fresh agreement CIDCO would contribute Rs.946 crore, railways will provide Rs.466 crore for the Rs.1,412.17 crore project.

At present, the commuters take a state transport (ST) bus from Nerul or Panvel to reach Nhava Sheva, Uran or JNPT.

The 27-km railway line will have 10 stations, four major bridges and five ROBs. The 10 stations to be built on the Nerul-Uran line are Seawoods, Sagarsanga (Kille), Targhar, Bamandongri, Kharkopar, Gavan, Ranjanpada, Nhava-Sheva, Dronagiri and Uran. There is a provision that one arm of the railway line will go to Belapur station while the other to Seawoods/ Nerul.
