Train services to and from Howrah station were affected for nearly two-and-a-half hours on Monday evening after a large group of people squatted on the railway tracks at the station’s car shed following the death of a woman, who was run over by a suburban.Thousands of passengers were stranded on the platforms and concourse of Howrah station, even as the authorities sought reinforcements from the State police.Security forces had to resort to baton charge to disperse the demonstrators who had turned violent.The services on both the Eastern Railway and South Eastern Railway divisions, suspended from 7.20 p.m., were resumed at 9.48 p.m., an official of the Eastern Railway said. Several long distance trains that were on their way to Howrah station were also stalled at various places.
