South Korean company has also bid for the contract.

KOLKATA, JUNE 28:  Two Indian railway coach-makers are among those in the fray to provide 14 air-conditioned rakes to Metro Railway, Kolkata.

A wing of the Indian Railways, the Metro, will require these rakes to feed its upcoming extension lines.

According to Mr Protyush Ghosh, Deputy General Manager, Metro Railway, Titagarh Wagons Ltd (TWL) and joint venture partner Japan-based Nippon Shariyo Ltd, have expressed interest for the contract.

The other company is a consortium of Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) and Chinese company, CAF India Ltd.

These apart, Mr. Ghosh said, a South Korean company has solely bid for the contract.

Declining to divulge the total contract value, Mr Protyush Ghosh said the authorities paid nearly Rs 5 crore for a rake for its existing route.

However, according to sources, the tendering process is on a slow track.

Metro Railway has taken up four extension projects entailing an investment of nearly Rs 11,000 crore.

These rakes are likely to feed the first phase of 17-km metro extension line connecting Joka near IIM Calcutta with BBD Bag, central business district of the city.

Construction works of nearly 9 km elevated stretch of this route is nearing completion.

This line is expected to be fully operational by 2016.

CONSTRUCTION TENDERS

Tenders have also been issued for two other Metro Railways extension projects.

These two are the Dum Dum to Barasat and Dum Dum to Barrackpore lines.

According to Mr Ghosh, a tender for constructing a 9 km stretch (out of a total of 18 km that the Barasat route along the northern fringes will cover) has been floated.

Meanwhile, tendering for the Barrackpore to Dum Dum metro line, has been completed, he said.

He, however, did not name the contractors for these projects.

Tenders for two other routes, the New Garia to Airport line and Joka to BBD Bag have been awarded to Afcons Infrastructure, Gammon India, Simplex Infrastructure and L&T Infra.
