The Delhi Metro services were affected on Tuesday again as the Northern Grid tripped for the second consecutive day, leading to massive power failure in the city. Thousands of commuters faced inconvenience as the Metro services suddenly stopped at around 1.15 pm and could not be resumed until 2.50 pm.
The entry gates and the security checking counters were immediately closed and the passengers already in the Metros were brought to the nearest Metro stations. The nine underground Metros too were evacuated on time and passengers were brought to the nearest Metro stations from where they took exit.
The Metro trains even after the services resumed arrived at a frequency of 10 minutes, leading to overcrowding, chaos and confusion. “Partial services restored on all lines with a frequency of 10 minutes to begin with from 2.50 pm,” a Delhi Metro spokesman said. All the Metro stations were jam-packed and people were standing neck-to-neck. Passengers were not able to board the train and in some instances, the doors of the Metro were stuck due to overcrowding. “There was a huge crowd at the entry gates with serpentine queues on the platform. People were packed in the coaches. Even after half-an-hour I could not get into a train,” said passenger Arpita Singh at the Central Secretariat Metro station.
As the frequency was low, more and more people attempted to board the first Metro they could.
