The Delhi Police’s Crime Branch arrested three persons on Wednesday for allegedly running a railway ticket racket in Paharganj close to New Delhi railway station.

Travel agents Vijay Majumdar (42) and Vijay Kumar (37) allegedly booked tickets on fake names and sold them at a premium — sometimes charging six times more than the actual ticket price, police said. They were held along with an alleged tout, Deenu Kumar (22), who used to look for people seeking “confirmed train tickets”, police said.

“We were informed about the racket. So, we laid a trap and sent one of our officers as a decoy customer. The tout sold a ticket worth Rs 232 for Rs 1,500 to the officer. We found 18 tickets on him,” DCP (Crime and Railways) Sanjay Kumar Jain said.

Deenu Kumar revealed that he worked as a commission agent for two travel agencies in Paharganj, police said.

“The owners of the two agencies were also taken into custody and 50 railway tickets were recovered from them,” the DCP said. “These tickets were booked for destinations such as Mumbai, Patna and Bangalore,” he said.
