Central Railways has added 21 more digital cameras into its fleet to enhance its surveillance and coverage. These cameras will be commissioned at bigger and sensitive railway stations like CST, Dadar, LTT, Thane and Kalyan. Male jawans will focus on male passengers while female constables will focus on ladies’ compartments. This move is being seen as a deterrent to criminals operating in trains and platforms to target their victims, especially to women passengers. Now, well-trained RPF jawans will shoot randomly at different railway premises and record activities with hand-held cameras at suburban stations. CR has spent `3.04 lakh to install these cameras. Earlier, such cameras recorded passenger reservation system centres to curb touts and hawkers’ activities. But, new hand-held and digital cameras will be positioned in and around areas of station premises to keep vigil and record the activities of the passersby, so that any untoward incidents could be reported and recorded thereof. Senior divisional security commissioner, Alok Bohra said, “We want upgraded personalised checking of commuters and bigger surveillance in and around the railway premises. It will work like a deterrent too.” While another RPF official said, “These security steps will work like a precautionary measure to check any further spurt in crime at stations.” He said, “CCTV cameras are already working across stations, but these are very ineffective in terms of its inferior resolution and inability to rotate on its axels.”
