Tamil Maanila Vivasaya Thozhilalargal Sangam affiliated to Communist Party of India (CPI) appealed to the State government to immediately announce a relief of Rs.25,000 an acre for the farmers of Cauvery delta districts who lost their samba crop.R.Mutharasan, general secretary of the sangam, told presspersons that farmers and farm labourers were eagerly awaiting that there would be some announcement about the relief in the Governor's address in the Assembly on Friday. But they were disappointed as nothing had been mentioned about the relief though the government is well known about the plight of farmers.Farmers have lost kuruvai and samba crops in canal-irrigated areas in the delta districts for want of water. Many agitations were held by farmers and farm labourers highlighting the crisis. The government sent a high-power committee to assess the crop damage and the committee also submitted a report to the government.Farmers and farm labourers organisations have said that the amount of Rs.13,652 an acre including crop insurance announced by the government is not sufficient. They have demanded Rs.25,000 an acre as relief to farmers, Rs.10,000 each as relief to the family of farm labourers, and Rs.10 lakh each as compensation to the family of farmers who allegedly committed suicide due to crop loss.
