Hundreds of residents in Gopalapuram, Besant Nagar, Adyar and Royapettah were forced to travel long distance for cash transactions after ATMs in the region malfunctioned when a Bharat Sanchal Nigam Limited cable snapped due to ongoing Chennai Metro Rail works.

Residents said that ATMs in several places malfunctioned from Friday evening. “I had been trying nearly all the ATMs in the stretch and nothing worked,” said a resident. A woman on anonymity said “I tried several State Bank ATMs but could not withdraw money. When I tried a private bank ATM, I got a message that the transaction has been done. But I did not get any money,” she added.

BSNL spokeswoman G Vijaya said that the cable snapped due to ongoing Metro Rail work in Whites Road Junction. “We have rectified the problem by providing an alternative server,” she said. The ATMs that have been affected include ICICI, HDFC, Indian Bank and SBI.

Meanwhile, in Arakkonam, services were hit at an SBI branch due to internet connectivity issues, following which enraged customers held a strike.
