Thikkodi: A railway employee who worked continuously for 30 hours fell unconscious on the Thikkodi railway station on Tuesday. Due to that railway gate remained closed for hours.

Ashwin, 20, a sweeper-cum-porter (SCP) from Shoranur was on duty from Monday at 7 am and continued to be on duty till Tuesday 11 am, as there were no substitutes. His collegues and travelers gave first aid. The gate was closed after keeping a alert board. It was opened only after 3 pm when another person came for duty. SCPs have the charge to close and open the gate every time a train passes and also to return to the platform and do their duty there too. There are two gates in north and south of Thikkodi station and 12 employyes are needed to guard it.

But in Thikkodi, the post of doing gate-cum-platform duty was scrapped. When the dearth in number of employees was brought to the attention of the railway, it was asked to continue with the present staff. As the gate was also closed for hours, the natives had a hard time.
