On the second anniversary of the brutal rape and murder of 23-year-old Soumya, Synergians, a group of  young professionals traced her route from Ernakulam station to Vallathol Nagar, on the same train that she had boarded.Twenty-three-year-old Soumya’s ill-fated journey on the Ernakulam-Shornur passenger train  on February 1, 2011, had shocked the state. The group conducted an awareness campaign on passenger rights, passenger safety and the need to speak out against atrocities. The journey was inaugurated by Justice Krishna Iyer at his residence.Candle lights were lit  in her memory at Vallathol Nagar railway station. The station became a memory lane as both passengers and staff joined the event in memory of Soumya.Problems and issues faced by passengers on the trains were also discussed in detail by the group.“We are trying to invoke a new concept called ‘passenger rights’. Just like a legislation on consumer rights was passed, there is an urgent need to bring passenger rights to the forefront. “Currently, we are demanding that the Parliament enact a legislation on passenger rights,” said Sujith, a member of Synergians.
