Title - Vigil up across Kanyakumari

The police have intensified vigil throughout Kanyakumari district in view of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15.

According to police sources, around 800 police personnel would be deployed in important junctions, markets, and coastal areas to prevent untoward incidents. The people in the coastal areas had been asked to report about suspicious movement of strangers to the nearest police station. The police had been conducting vehicle checks on National and State Highways, besides rural roads, till August 15. They would also carry out checks in lodges in Kanyakumari, Nagercoil and Marthandam.

Vehicle checks were conducted at Nagercoil, Chettikulam, Kottar, Marthandam, Suchindrum, Thuckalay, Colachel and Kanyakumari from the midnight of Saturday to early hours of Sunday. The Nagercoil division police registered cases against 24 persons who violated traffic rules including drunken driving, driving without driving license, over speed etc., 52 persons in Thuckalay division, 48 persons in Colachel division, and 52 persons in Kanyakumari division.

The police also detained 24 persons who were moving in a suspicious manner during late night hours. They were released after taking their thumb impression.

Similarly the Railway Protection Force intensified their vigil in Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Eraniel and Kuzhithurai railway stations. The passengers would be subjected to through check before entering and leaving the railway stations. The Southern Railway has banned transporting parcels through trains for three days from Monday as part of precautionary measures.
