Kochi: The Railway Users’ Association and Synergians  (a team of professionals)  organised programmes in memory of Soumya, who was brutally raped and murdered during her train journey from Ernakulam to Shoranur on February 1 in 2011.

Synergian members  embarked on a journey on the Ernakulam-Shornur passenger train, travelling the same route  that Soumya did on that fateful night, as she took the trip which would be her last.  Students of the Institute of Management and Technology, Alappuzha, joined the journey.

The trip, called ‘yathra,’ started from the residence of Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer, where he handed over a symbolic train ticket to the group members.

The Synergians conducted an ‘awareness class’ for auto and taxi drivers, providing them  with simple suggestions on decent behaviour to passengers. They lit candles before a  photograph of Soumya and took an oath to ensure  womens’ safety.

The Synergians’ team has also been working for passenger rights and they want to declare June 7,  International Passenger Rights’ Day. The focus will be on the right of each individual to travel safely and comfortably.

On Friday morning, the Railway Users’ association organised an ‘awareness meeting’ at the railway station premises.
