LUDHIANA : The Northern Railway Pensioners Welfare Association has come down heavily upon the Punjab government for its decision to impose property tax on the owners of residential houses in the state.

Addressing a monthly meeting of the association, its chairman Sher Singh said that the new tax was a desperate bid by the government to tide over the grave financial crisis that the municipal bodies were facing.

In the process, the people, who are already reeling under the adverse impact of overall price rise, were being made to suffer.Sher Singh maintained that majority of the owners of residential houses in the city, or elsewhere in the state, could ill afford to bear the additional burden of property tax. He pointed out that at least in Ludhiana, the MC had not been able to provide basic amenities to a large majority of the city population.

"Roads, water supply, sewerage network  and other infrastructure are in a pathetic condition which leave no room for imposing any more financial burden on the people," he said.
