MUMBAI: The body of 11/7 train blasts victim, Amit Singh, was consigned to flames at Virar crematorium Friday. The 27-year-old youth had succumbed to lung infection on Thursday after prolonged hospitalization lasting seven years. As serial explosions ripped through Mumbai's local trains on July 11, 2006, Amit suffered serious head injuries aboard a train at Mira Road. His older brother Dhiraj (30) said, "We were hopeful of a recovery until the very end. Amit would recognize us even though he could not speak. We had come to understand what he wanted through his silence as well." Dhiraj, a project manager with an IT firm, had always been protective of his younger sibling. "He did not show signs of collapse all these years. We were confident he would recover from the bout of pneumonia he developed last week. However, his lungs stopped receiving adequate oxygen and the doctors at Jaslok Hospital warned us that the end was near." Amit's distraught parents remained confined to an inner room in their apartment at Agarwal Heights on Friday afternoon. They had not slept a wink since his passing. Meanwhile, relatives and neighbours continued to arrive to offer condolences. The family is pained that no conviction has yet been achieved in the case. "We are languishing in the hope of a speedy trial and justice is nowhere in sight," Dhiraj said. "There are interminable intervals between hearings. The media has stopped following this attack, its anniversary as well as the progression of the trial." Although Western Railway oversaw the hospital expenses, the family's finances were drained as each member regularly visited Jaslok.
