The Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industries has urged the railways authorities to allocate funds for the double-line project between Chennai and Kanyakumari.In a communication to the Railway Minister, Chamber secretary P.T.K.A.Balasubramanian said at present the single track was overused.The conversion work had been completed only for a distance of 166 km as against the total distance of 742 km.The Chamber also demanded early commissioning of double-line projects connecting Madurai and Bodi, Shenkottai and Punalur, Palani, Coimbatore and Pollachi.Mr.Balasubramanian said a new terminal at Royapuram in Chennai was the need of the hour as the other two terminals — Chennai Central and Egmore — were highly congested.Adequate funds should be allocated for early commissioning of the work, he stressed.The Chamber’s other demands included setting up of East Coast Railway, introduction of a new train between Kanyakumari and Varanasi via Madurai, and construction of escalators to replace foot overbridges.
