If everything goes as planned, the garbage crisis which has gripped the entire state would be over by December 2013, according to Suchitwa Mission executive director George Chakkacherry. He was speaking at a seminar on ‘Waste disposal and regional Issues’ in the city on Thursday. A three-tier solution of source-level waste management, including upgradation of biogas plants and setting up of modern waste treatment plants, are the ways he suggested as the methods for solving the issues. Alongside, regional plants at three centres are envisaged for managing plastic waste. In Thiruvananthapuram, water content in the garbage is one reason George cited for the crisis existing in management. In the waste generated here, 70-per cent water content is found. When it rains, this content increases and generates a repelling odour. This kind of garbage takes time to generate biogas or to become compost. He also spoke about the popular protests encountered while trying to manage waste in quarries and at Nettukaltheri. The raising of the railway platform by mixing soil and waste materials had to be dropped as people protested after two attempts; one at Murukkumpuzha and the other at Veli. In the city, George said, a 35- tonne modern waste treatment plant would be commissioned in March and paper works for it are over. | ||
