The State government has released Rs. 3.39 crore towards the completion of work on three railway underbridges (RUB) here.According to an order issued on Wednesday from the Secretary, Infrastructure Development Department, the funds will be spent on the three RUBs being built on a cost-sharing basis with the Railways: Rs. 2.38 crore on the RUB near Ashoka Hotel; Rs 89.44 lakh on the RUB near the Regional Transport Office, and Rs. 30.45 lakh on the RUB near the police Kalyan Mantap.The work includes land acquisition, shifting of utilities, construction of a carrier bridge and relaying and widening of roads.Deputy Commissioner P.C. Jaffer expressed hope that work on these projects would pick up speed.“All three RUBs are complete; they only need connectivity to the main road and some banking on two sides. This was delayed as utilities, such as water supply pipes, needed to be shifted. We have begun shifting these pipes, and the paperwork for land acquisition is ready,” he said.

Put off

However, work on the connecting road to the RUB at the police Kalyan Mantap has been put off till the end of the examination season. “We will need to move some families currently residing at the police quarters which will be demolished to build the connecting road. Half the families there have shifted, and the rest will move out after the examinations,” K. Tyagarajan, Superintendent of Police, said.

“The State government is sharing the cost of these projects with the Railways, except the cost of land acquisition,” said a senior officer.

“Now that the State has released its share, we are hopeful that the Railways will as well,” he added.
