The Kanyakumari Institute of Development Studies has urged the Railway Ministry to transfer railway stations in Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts administered by the Thiruvananthapuram division to the Madurai division. In a memorandum to Railway Minister Mallikarjun Khagre, KIDS chairman D. Peter has stated that the passenger amenities of railway stations in Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts in Tamil Nadu were poor when compared to those in Kerala. Even for stations with similar revenue generation, there were huge differences in the passenger amenities provided between stations in Kerala and in Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts.Nagercoil Junction, an important station in the Southern Railways, did not have enough amenities in proportion to the annual revenue it generated (about Rs. 26 crore). Moreover, Kanyakumari, an international tourist destination, has no amenities when compared to even some small stations in Kerala. The Thiruvananthapuram division was not keen to develop the railway infrastructure at stations situated in Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts. It had been ignoring the needs of the two districts. For instance, trains passing through these two districts were being operated to suit the convenience of passengers using stations in Kerala. | ||
