Mumbai: A 24-inch pipeline burst near Sewri railway station on Saturday evening, flooding the Harbour Line tracks and consequently, disrupting the suburban railway services in the evening peak hour and inconveniencing commuters. The pipe breached near a place where work on the extension of a platform at Sewri station was going on, said a civic official. The BMC is, however, yet to find out the exact spot where the pipe burst and so, could not ascertain the amount of damage caused. Officials suspect that the work on the pipeline could have caused the fissure. They are, however, unable to tell how long it will taketo the repair the hole.
The flooding of the tracks put the Harbour Line services behind schedule. CR's public relations officer A K Singh said, "A speed restriction of 30 kmph had to be imposed on the stretch. As a result, the Harbour services ran behind schedule during the evening peak hour."
Anuj Shukla from Vashi said he took almost 30 minutes more than usual to reach his destination as the train crawled between CST and Sewri. With the trains were running slow and late, a Belapur resident decided totake the bus. "But there was huge jam on Ghatkopar Mankhurd Link Road because of the spillover of the railway crowd. It took me almost an hour to reach Vashi from Kurla highway," said Sonal Mehta. In another incident, a minor pipe burst was reported from Tilak Nagar at 4am on Saturday. It was repaired by Saturday evening, and water supply to the area will be normal from Sunday.
