Guwahati : The Rangiya Division of Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway has organised a “Level Crossing Awareness Week” from May 1, which will culminate in celebration of the “International Level Crossing Awareness Day” on May 7.India is a member country of “International Union of Railways” which is celebrating May 7 as the “International Level Crossing Awareness Day” every year.The observation of the day assumes significance in light of the fact that level crossings accidents are responsible for 41% of total accidents, 66% of deaths and 33% injuries over Indian Railways. This figure does not include deaths at Unauthorized Crossings.In line with the motto for this year’s celebration - Act Safely at Level Crossings – the division is organizing various programmes including a eight-kilometre walkathon from the office of the Divisional Railway Manager, Rangiya at 6.30 am on May 1.From May 2-7 level crossing awareness campaigns and street-plays will be held near various level crossings at Rangiya, New Bongaigoan, Nalbari, Barpeta Road, Azara and Rangapara. Besides, level crossing safety awareness campaigns will also be organised in various school & colleges of Rangiya, Bongaigaon and Azara.

The division will also launch SMS Campaign through mobile phones, distribute handbills and pamphlets to build awareness on safety precautions to be taken at railway level crossings.

School bags, pencils, erasers, pencil box, stickers with slogans will also be distributed among students through some NGOs.

The division will also organise some sports events and competitions to spread messages for safe practice at level crossings.

The division requests co-operations and participation of all concerned people in the week-long programmes.
